What is iEARN? (The International Education and Resources Network) |
iEARN is a non-profit network of over 20,000 schools in 110 + countries, that empowers teachers and youth to collaborate through a global telecommunications network on projects designed to make a difference in the world. Since 1988, iEARN has pioneered on-line school linkages to enable students to engage in meaningful educational projects--with peers around the corner and thro.ughout the world. iEARN is: . a safe and structured environment in which youth can communicate. . a community of teachers and learners. . a known audience for writing and reading with a purpose. . an opportunity to apply knowledge in service-learning projects. . an inclusive and culturally diverse community. After joining, teachers and students enter online forum spaces to meet other participants and get involved in ongoing projects, initiated by teachers and students throughout the world. In addition to meeting a specific curriculum need, every project proposed in iEARN has to answer the question, 'how will this project affect the quality of life on the planet?' That vision and purpose is the glue that holds iEARN together. Through participation in iEARN projects, students develop the habit of getting involved in community issues, thus becoming better equipped for positive and effective civic participation.
